Profile of Gary Ludwig
Mr. Ludwig is a recognized national fire and EMS expert, pioneering many concepts which are now standard practice in fire and EMS systems. Mr. Ludwig has over 28 years of fire and EMS experience. Mr. Ludwig currently serves as a deputy fire chief for the Memphis Fire Department. The Memphis Fire Department is an 1,800+ person fire department, operating from 55 fire stations, a $129 million budget, and last year responded on approximately 145,000 alarms. Mr. Ludwig retired as the Chief Paramedic from the St. Louis Fire Department in 2001. He was employed full time with the City of St. Louis for 25 years after starting employment with the City two months out of high school. During his career he rose through the ranks and managed various programs or Bureaus including field operations, support services, and the Fire Alarm Communications Center. During his tenure with the City of St. Louis, Mr. Ludwig had countless accomplishments. It was during his administration of EMS, that the fire department was awarded "Missouri’s EMS Service of the Year for 1998" and he personally was awarded "Missouri’s EMS Administrator of the Year for 1998." He has received several Mayoral Awards for Heroism and two Mayoral Awards for safety and improved levels of service. Mr. Ludwig currently serves as Vice-Chairman for the EMS Section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. He is in his sixth elected term. Mr. Ludwig has earned a Bachelors degree in Business Administration and a Masters degree in Management and Business. Additionally, he is a licensed paramedic. Mr. Ludwig is also a contributing editor and writes a monthly column that appears in Firehouse Magazine and is a "page one" columnist for Firehouse.com. Additionally, he writes a monthly leadership column that appears in JEMS Magazine. Mr. Ludwig has authored over 300 articles in such publications as the IAFC’s On Scene, 9-1-1 Magazine, Fire Chief Magazine, Firehouse Magazine, Journal of Emergency Medical Services, EMS Magazine, and National Fire & Rescue. Also, Mr. Ludwig is a nationally known and requested speaker and has made over 200 public presentations at conferences or professional seminars in 42 states and several foreign countries.
